PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND
ALASKA
Prince of Wales Island
|
Located just a three-hour ferry ride from Ketchikan, Prince of Wales Island is a vast, rugged island and the perfect destination for adventurous visitors who come to Alaska with a paddle, backpack , or camera in hand....or with hopes of landing a trophy salmon or halibut.
The Inter-Island Ferry Authority provides daily service from Ketchikan, and once on the island, visitors can head off to a dozen small villages and communities, with most offering accommodations and other services. The largest, most amenity-friendly towns are Craig and Klawock, which are only seven miles apart....but still a 30+ mile drive from Hollis, across the island along the paved Hollis-Klawock Highway. Also supporting lodging, restaurants, small grocery stores, and other visitor amenities are Thorne Bay, 38 miles northeast from Klawock, and Coffman Cove, 55 miles north of Klawock. There is an extensive road network on the Island. Recently completed roadbuilding activities now provide paved two-lane highway from Hollis, north to Whale Pass. At the Control Lake Junction, travelers can also head east to Thorne Bay. In addition to the paved roads there are miles of extensive dirt roads and jeep trail as a result of past and current logging activities. |

In addition to the IFA Ferry Service between Ketchikan and POWIAK, there are a variety of Air Service carriers ranging from Alaska Airlines which flies into Ketchikan from Seattle; Island Air which operates a variety of wheeled planes which fly from the Ketchikan Airport to the Klawock Airport; and several Float Plane operators which fly from the docks in Ketchikan to the various communities on the Island.
Once visitors arrive on POWIAK, travel options include bringing personal vehicles transported on the Ferry, a variety of rental car options, and the availability of taxi and shuttle vehicles.
Lodges and charter fishing operations often provide shuttle transportation for their guests.
